Supporting Orokonui Ecosanctuary

At Hope and Sons, we believe one of the most lasting legacies we can leave is a gift to the environment. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Orokonui Ecosanctuary — a protected coastal forest just north of Dunedin where rare wildlife and native plants are given the chance to thrive.

Why Orokonui Matters

The Orokonui Ecosanctuary is 307 hectares of regenerating native forest, with 230 hectares protected as a nature reserve — the highest level of conservation in New Zealand. It’s home to kaka, fantail, bellbird, tuatara, jewelled gecko, Haast kiwi, and many other species.

Rare native plants have been reintroduced, and even a new species of lichen has been discovered — found nowhere else in the world. The sanctuary is a living reminder of what it means to care for both people and the planet.

A Lasting Legacy

Each year, Hope and Sons makes a contribution to Orokonui Ecosanctuary. To acknowledge this support, a memorial seat is placed in the sanctuary, inset with a plaque in memory of the families we have cared for.

Visitors are welcome to find these memorial seats, take time to reflect, and experience the unique peace of the forest. It’s our way of connecting remembrance with renewal, offering families a legacy that lives on in nature.

Community and Sustainability

Our support for Orokonui reflects our wider commitment to the Dunedin community and to eco-friendly funerals. Just as we help families choose sustainable options for farewells, we also invest in protecting the land, plants, and animals that make Otago so special.
