- Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Otago University - Alan died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in Dunedin, on Tuesday January 20, 2026, after a period of poor health; aged 85 years.  Loved partner of Iveta. Beloved husband of the late Julia Musgrave.  Treasured father to Alastair, Rachel, Helen and Jens, Frances and Greg, James and Lisa.  Cherished grandad to Dylan and Kelly, Xanthe; Olivia, Tamati, Hamuera; Madeline, Ella, Molly, and George.  Doting great-grandfather to Bodhi, and Tasman.  Loved brother to Graham and Jane, uncle to Hannah and Dave; Rebecca and Craig; great-uncle to Nixon, Archer, August, and Felix.  Heartwarming thanks to the Royal District Nurse Service Carers and the palliative care team at Dunedin Hospital.  - A funeral service will be held to honour Alan's life in Hope and Sons Chapel, 523 Andersons Bay Road, at 2pm on Saturday, January 24, followed by private cremation.
